Grand Designs Planning Required

Ever set out to achieve a big goal like start your own company, run a marathon or, like Tom and Danielle Raffield did, build a dream house.

You may have seen their house (pictured) featured on Channel 4‘s show, Grand Designs.  The Raffield’s had a challenging plot of land in south Cornwall, a very limited budget and a dream to use their skills as wood benders to build a unique and beautiful family house.  They didn’t have all the skills they needed to build a house, they had to bring people in to do demolition, ground works and block work, but they learnt along the way by being involved.

Planning

When you face a challenge like this, planning is key.  Its the only way keep control on the costs, get activities done in the right order and focus on the important stuff.  In the Raffield’s plan they had to work out what they could do themselves and where they had to get other professionals to help them.  Where they could they keep costs down by learning new skills and doing the work themselves.

The General Data Protection Regulation and the forthcoming Data Protection Act 2017 (a bill at time of writing) are a challenge that many organisations need to face now so that they are well underway by May 2018.  Planning is key and knowing what you can do and what you need other professionals to help you with will help you keep control of the costs and time.  Doing what you can yourself will keep your costs lower and knowing exactly what actions you need to take will help you find the right professionals to assist.
