A 21st century problem…

A 21st century solution to a 21st century problem”.  This is the description given to a major overhaul of personal data protection at an industry conference.

The use of our personal data is still a very grey area for many internet users. Recently, someone provided their contact details while researching a potential online purchase. A sales call from that website two days later left them astounded.  Times and dates they had logged on to the website were know by the salesperson. It was shocking the way their information and web habits had been so closely monitored.

This is just one of countless examples of consumers being unaware of information processing.

What is the impact of GDPR?

The stringent European privacy regulations give consumers and citizens stronger rights. Data subjects rights include being informed of how personal data is used as well as requesting correction or deletion.

GDPR modernises much of the law laid out in the Data Protection Act 1998. Organisations will need to have more respect and accountability for the way in which they use personal data.  The UK government will soon pass a new bill into law which will align to the EU directive.

Where a person’s information is in use comes a need for transparency explaining purposes and processes.

It is up to each and every business to be GDPR ready when the changes come in next May. If you’re not, you could face an irreparable hit to your business reputation.  Who wants to do business with a company that fails to handle their customers’ personal data securely?

Having the knowledge and skills to comply with the new European Data Protection laws could seem overwhelming but using our compliance software can demystify the changes.
