Unprecedented growth in the production and sale of plastics is triggering disastrous environmental consequences. Plastic production has increased twentyfold in the past half-century and is expected to double again in the next 20 years.
In the 60 years since large-scale production of plastics began, 79% of plastic waste globally has been disposed of in landfills or the natural environment, 12% has been incinerated and a mere 9% recycled.
